Francesco Guerra (born November 10, 1942 in Naples ) is an Italian mathematical physicist.

Life

Guerra graduated from the University of Naples in 1964 . From 1966 to 1968 he was a scientist at the Italian national nuclear research center INFN and from 1968 professor (Professor Incaricato) at the University of Naples. 1970 to 1972 he was at Princeton University . In 1971 he completed his habilitation. 1974 to 1975 he was assistant professor at the University of Aix-Marseille in Luminy and 1975/76 at the Institute for Advanced Study . From 1976 he was a physics professor at the University of Salerno (from 1978 also deputy rector). Since 1979 he has been Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Rome (La Sapienza), first in the Faculty of Mathematics (of which he was Director 1983/84), from 1985 in the Faculty of Physics, which he headed from 1995 to 2001.

Guerra deals with quantum field theory ( axiomatic quantum field theory and lattice theory ) and statistical mechanics. Guerra and Michel Talagrand were able to provide a strict justification for Giorgio Parisi's Replica method for spin glasses.

In 2004 he gave one of the plenary lectures at the European Congress of Mathematicians ( Mathematical aspects of mean field spin glass theory ) and in 2006 a plenary lecture at the International Congress for Mathematical Physics in Rio de Janeiro.
