Francis Poku

Francis Kweku Poku (born October 24, 1941 , Kumasi ) was a leading police officer and is now a politician in Ghana . In the government of President John Agyekum Kufuor he was Minister for National Security until January 12, 2008, when he was removed from office without official reason.

Poku was born in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti region . After graduating from Opoku Ware Secondary School (1957–1963), he enrolled at the University of Ghana . He studied French from 1963 to 1967 and graduated with a Bachelor (Hons.). Between 1964 and 1965, Poku was enrolled at the University of Dakar and received his degree in French. He received a certificate in management from Guildford University in London.

Between 1968 and 1982 he worked for the Ghana Police Service, among other things in the position of Chief Inspector. After only six months he was promoted to the rank of assistant to the superintendent of the police. In 1983 he moved to the University of Westminster in London and became a lecturer in law. From 1987 to 1995 Poku worked in Great Britain. He ended his police career in Ghana in October 2001 in the position of Commissioner of Police, to which he was only promoted in January 2001.

Poku was National Security Coordinator with responsibility for strategic management in Ghana's security services between 2001 and 2006. In June 2006 he was appointed Minister of National Security by President Kufuor.
