Francisca Lucas Pereira Gomes , or Francisca Pereira for short (* 1942 in Bolama , Portuguese Guinea ) is a Guinea-Bissau nurse , resistance fighter and politician ( PAIGC ).

Life

Pereira was born in 1942 in the former capital of the Portuguese colony Portuguese Guinea, Bolama . As a teenager, she joined the Guinea-Bissau resistance and independence movement PAIGC in 1959/60. She first worked in the secretariat and the school of the PAIGC in Conakry , later she was sent to the USSR in 1965 to receive training as a nurse. From 1967 she was deputy head of the Escola Piloto in Conakry, a training center of the party for Guinea-Bissau orphans and war refugees.

Shortly afterwards, the PAIGC from Guinea sent her directly to the contested colony, where she worked as a nurse in the southern areas already occupied by the PAIGC. In 1970 she was transferred and sent further north. There she also worked as a nurse in the PAIGC hospital in Ziguinchor (Senegal). Between 1970 and 1975 Francisca Pereira also represented the women's wing of the PAIGC at numerous conferences.

Since the independence of Guinea-Bissau, Pereira has held various offices in the Guinea-Bissau state. Among other things, she was mayor of her native Bolama and chairwoman of the women's union of the PAIGC ( União Democrática das Mulheres da Guiné-Bissau ). After the democratization of Guinea-Bissau and a move towards a multi-party system, Pereira took on various offices in the 1990s: from 1990 to 1994 she was Minister for Women's Affairs, from 1994 to 1997 first deputy president of the National People's Assembly and from 1997 to 1999 interior minister.
