Francisco del Rosario Sánchez (born March 9, 1817 in Santo Domingo , † July 4, 1861 in San Juan de la Maguana ) was a Dominican politician and is considered one of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic.

Career

In his youth, Sánchez studied Latin and philosophy with Nicolás Lugo and later with Father Gaspar Hernández , who came from Peru . During this time he met Juan Pablo Duarte and founded with him and Ramon Mella in 1838 La Trinitaria , a secret organization that campaigned for the independence of Hispaniola from Spain.

On February 27, 1844, he was the one who read the proclamation of the founding of the Dominican Republic. For a short time he headed the provisional government, the Junta Central Gubernativa , of the republic, until he was replaced by Tomás Bobadilla . When Pedro Santana became President of the Dominican Republic, Sánchez, like Duarte and Mella, had to go into exile. A decree by his successor Manuel Jiménez enabled him to return to the Dominican Republic in 1849. In 1859, his differences with Pedro Santana, who at that time held the fourth presidency, forced Sánchez into exile again.

There he campaigned against the threatened renewed annexation of the Dominican Republic by Spain. Three months after the annexation in 1861, he returned to his country with José María Cabral and others. He was betrayed, arrested and executed on July 4th in San Juan de la Maguana. In the Dominican Republic, his birthday is celebrated as día del patricio Francisco del Rosario Sánchez .
