Frank G. Back

Frank Gerhard Back (born August 25, 1902 in Vienna , † July 6, 1983 in San Diego , California) was an engineer.

Back studied from 1920 at the Technical University in Vienna, did his master’s degree in 1925 and his doctorate in 1931.

He worked in Vienna as an independent consulting engineer. Between September 1938 and the summer of 1939 he emigrated to the USA via France, where he worked as an engineer for various companies in New York City. In 1944 he founded his Research and Development Laboratory and the following year Zoomar Inc. , where brother-in-law Herbert Lowen also worked. Back invented various optical devices, so u. a. In 1948 an optically compensated lens for television cameras and in 1959 one for SLR cameras. Voigtländer then released the Zoomar 36-82 mm f / 2.8.

In 1955 he went on an expedition to the Philippines to observe and photograph the solar eclipse on June 20th. Previously, he had asked Einstein († April 18, 1955) which data he needed to prove the theory of relativity.
