Frank Kempken (* 1960 ) is a German biologist and university professor. Since 2018 he has been Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

Life

Kempken studied biology at the Ruhr University in Bochum and became a biologist in 1985. In Karl Esser's group, Kempken worked on mitochondrial plasmids and was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD. From 1989 to 1990 he did a research stay at the University of Florida , USA. Then Kempken returned to Bochum, where he worked on the one hand with plant mitochondria and on the other hand with Ulrich Kück on transposons in mushrooms. In 1991 Kempken received the Rudolf von Bennigsen Foerder Prize from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1996 he completed his habilitation. For his habilitation thesis he received the Klaus Marquardt Prize from the Friends of the Ruhr University. In 1997, Kempken completed a research stay at Flinders University of South Australia . In 2001, Kempken turned down an offer from Bielefeld University and accepted a position from Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. Since then he has been director at the Botanical Institute. Since 2004 he has been a second member of the medical faculty. From 2012 to 2014 Kempken was Vice President of the Society for Genetics and from 2014 to 2017 President of the Society for Genetics for two terms. His scientific work includes numerous publications and a textbook. His current research focus is the molecular genetics and genomics of marine fungi. In addition, he continues to work on RNA processing in plant mitochondria. He is a member of the Kiel research focus areas Kiel Marine Science and Kiel Life Science.

From 2004 to 2008, Kempken was Vice-Dean for Study Affairs of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences for two terms and from 2008 to 2014, also for two terms, Vice President for Studies and Teaching of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. From 2008 to 2014 he was a member of the Culture and Science Senate of the City of Kiel . Kempken is a volunteer member of the Advisory Board of the Hermann Ehlers Academy , has been chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Foreign Students in Kiel since 2014 and a member of the Adjutorium of the Peter and Elke Stoffers Foundation since 2018.

Kempken is married and has one son.
