Frank Mater (born May 1, 1963 in Eisenach ; † March 22, 1984 near Wendehausen ) was a fatality on the inner-German border .

Life

On the afternoon of March 22, 1984, 20-year-old Frank Mater from Mihla , Eisenach district , approached the border from Wendehausen, Mühlhausen district. Approx. 2500 m west of Wendehausen between the border pillars 1385 and 1386 he overcame the border signal fence , triggered it and ran in the cover of a forest to border fence 1 with fragmentation mines. At around 1:37 p.m. he triggered a fragmentation mine (self-firing system SM 70) in the middle row and was seriously injured. The recovery of the injured person began at 2 p.m. At 2:30 p.m. the regimental doctor declared that he was dead.

He was probably the last person to be killed in a mine on the inner-German border, as it was removed in November 1984 in return for a one billion DM loan brokered by Franz Josef Strauss .

In a trial for the death of Mater and five other escape victims who died from self-shot systems or the use of firearms, the responsible former members of the National Defense Council of the GDR were sentenced to four and a half to seven and a half years in prison for inciting manslaughter.
