František Čech (geochemist)
František Čech (born August 7, 1929 in Měřín ; † 1995 ) was a Czech geochemist and mineralogist .
Life
Čech studied mineralogy and petrology at the Faculty of Science of Charles University in Prague from 1950 to 1954 , obtained his Ph. D. in 1962 and became a professor at Charles University in 1965. He worked for a year at the Lomonosov University in Moscow and in 1976 became head of the Department of Mineralogy, Geochemistry and Crystallography of the Faculty of Science at Charles University. He held this position until 1990. He was also Dean of the Faculty of Science from 1970 to 1971 and from 1974 to 1980.
He has published more than 90 original articles in scientific journals, as well as various textbooks and other study materials and was head of the Czech National Committee for Mineralogy, the Czech branch of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). He was a member of the IMA's New Minerals and Mineral Names Commission and, since 1956, a member of the Mineralogical Society of America .
Čech's particular scientific interest was in beryllium minerals, mica and tourmalines . With Mary E. Mrose he worked on the structure of phosphates, identified three new mineral types of the telluride group and two new sulphoarsenates. Zdeněk Mrázek and Zdeněk Táborský named the mineral Čechit, described in 1981, after him.
