Cameroun , often referred to as French Cameroon in German texts , was part of the French colonial empire in Central Africa from 1916 to 1960 . The area, which today makes up the majority of the Republic of Cameroon , was a B League of Nations mandate from 1922 to 1946 and a UN trustee area from 1946 to 1960 .

The German colony of Cameroon was occupied by the British and French during the First World War . The League of Nations then gave France and the United Kingdom mandate over the area. After the Second World War, the status of the area was converted into a UN trust area. In January 1960, when the country gained its independence, it was still waiting for unification with the British part of Cameroon - and in October 1961 the southern part of this area, the so-called South Cameroon, was integrated into the new state of Cameroon, while the northern part was added to Nigeria was affiliated.
