Franz Edwin Gehrig-Targis

Franz Edwin Gehrig-Targis , also just Franz Gehrig (born May 25, 1896 in Berlin ; † June 7, 1968 there ) was a German painter, graphic artist and sculptor. He was a communist art functionary during the Weimar Republic and also worked artistically in the interests of the party.

Life

He completed an apprenticeship as a textile draftsman. He then studied at various artistic training centers in Berlin such as the teaching institute of the Kunstgewerbemuseum , the United State Schools and the Prussian Academy of the Arts .

During the November Revolution he took part in the fighting in Berlin on the side of the revolutionaries. He became a member of the KPD in 1925 . Gehrig was the founder of a communist faction in the Reich Economic Association of Visual Artists . In 1928 he was a co-founder of the Berlin Association of Revolutionary Visual Artists .

He worked in the headquarters of the KPD in the Karl-Liebknecht-Haus and was jointly responsible for the illustration of the party press. His graphics with the corresponding motifs and political messages found widespread use in the everyday life of workers in the Weimar Republic. Between 1931 and 1946 he ran a private art school.

After the end of the Second World War he had a teaching position at the Berlin-Weissensee School of Art . Between 1954 and 1965 he was a lecturer at the College of Applied Arts in Berlin-Oberschöneweide.
