Franz Eibel (* 1904 ; † June 24, 1934 in Kapfenberg ) was a Catholic clergyman in Styria .

Life

At the beginning of the 1930s he looked after the parish of Kapfenberg St. Oswald together with Kaplan Schrey under Pastor Florian Plaschk.

Kaplan Franz Eibel was very involved in youth work, which was a thorn in the side of the National Socialists, who had been banned in Austria since 1933 and who also wanted to win over young people. In addition, in the early summer of 1934 a wreath placed by the illegal Nazis on the war memorial in the parish church of Kapfenberg St. Oswald was removed from the parish.

On the night of June 23rd to 24th, 1934, illegal National Socialists deposited a bomb in front of the rectory of the parish church. This exploded at the moment when the chaplains Eibel and Schrey looked for suspicious noises. Chaplain Franz Eibel was seriously injured. After he was taken to the regional hospital in Bruck an der Mur , he died there of his injuries on June 24, 1934.

He was accompanied in a large funeral procession to Kapfenberg- Diemlach , from where he was transferred to his home parish. The funeral speech at the funeral was given by the then Minister of Education and later Federal Chancellor Dr. Kurt Schuschnigg held.

Kaplan Franz Eibel is an early victim of National Socialism in Austria. A street in Kapfenberg is named after him.
