Franz Poenitz (born August 17, 1850 in Bischofswerder , West Prussia , † March 19, 1912 in Berlin ) was a German harpist and composer .

Life

Franz Poenitz, actually Franz von Burkowitz, grew up with his uncle, who recognized and encouraged his musical talent as a violinist. Franz took his name Poenitz out of gratitude. At the age of six he gave concerts in Sweden. At the age of fourteen he was employed by the Royal Berlin Opera Orchestra. A short time later he became a chamber musician and stayed with this orchestra for almost fifty years.

meaning

Franz Poenitz enjoyed an excellent reputation as a harp virtuoso and his touch was considered ideal. In terms of composition, he took his inspiration primarily from the landscape and legends of the Scandinavian countries, which he often traveled to. In particular, he composed for his instrument with an enthusiastic romantic expression. At the end of the 19th century he also turned to the harmonium and brought this instrument to the front in the concert hall.
