Franz Segbers (born August 8, 1949 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German Old Catholic theologian.

Career

Segbers studied Catholic theology , educational sciences and social sciences at the University of Münster . Until 1985 he was company chaplain in Frankfurt-Höchst. During this time he organized the first exchange programs between German and Brazilian employees and works councils of multinational corporations, some of which were initially heavily criticized by the unions. In 1985 he did his doctorate there on collective bargaining law and a socio-ethical assessment of strikes and lockouts to obtain a Dr. theol. In protest against the repression of the theology of liberation by the Vatican, Franz Segbers resigned from the Roman Catholic Church and joined the Old Catholic Church in 1986. After a short time as a parish priest in Heidelberg, he became a lecturer in theology and social ethics at the Evangelical Social Academy Friedewald in 1988. In 1999 he completed his habilitation at the Protestant theological department of the Philipps University of Marburg on the subject of the Torah house rules. In addition, Segbers has been a consultant for ethics and social policy in the Diakonisches Werk in Hesse and Nassau since 2002 and co-organizer of the protests and mass demonstrations against the cut policy of the Hessian Prime Minister Roland Koch in 2003. He is co-author and first signatory of the call by scientists against the "Kahlschlag im Social budget ”: Hessen must remain social . Segbers is co-author of the Hessian Social Charter, which was drawn up to protest against the social cuts and handed over to the Hessian state government with almost 4,000 signatures. He is a co-founder of the Hessian Social Forum. In 2005/2006 he was chairman of the League of Free Welfare Associations in Rhineland-Palatinate. With the DGB state chairman Stefan Körzell and the ASTA chairman Mike Joseph he was one of the plaintiffs at the Hessian State Court for the abolition of tuition fees. Since 2010 he has been the spokesman for the State Poverty Conference in Rhineland-Palatinate. Segbers is committed to the neoliberal transformation of the welfare state and is one of the founders of the sanctions moratorium.

Segbers is involved in the fight against neoliberal globalization and works with Marxist categories on a theological criticism of capitalism as a religion . In this sense, he was next to Ulrich Duchrow , Frank Crüsemann , Heino Falcke , Christian Felber , Kuno Füssel , Detlef Hensche , Ton Veerkamp , Karl Georg Zinn and others on Reformation Day 2008 . a. Segbers was the coordinator of a working group of the Old Catholic Churches, the Iglesia Filipina Independiente and the Episcopal Church USA on the question of the connection between catholicity and globalization. In 2013 he gave a lecture on "Catholicity and Globalization" at the 10th General Assembly of the World Council of Churches in Busan / South Korea.

His main research interests include a. presents the topics of “future of work ” and “ globalization ” against the background of Christian social ethics .

Segbers assumes that full employment in the traditional sense will no longer exist. He pleads for a fair distribution of gainful employment and an appreciation of other social work. The material basis for this should be the unconditional basic income . He is therefore an honorary member of the scientific advisory board of the Basic Income Network , the German organization in the Basic Income Earth Network ( BIEN ).

Franz Segbers was nominated by the party Die Linke in the Hessian state parliament to be a member of the 15th Federal Assembly on March 18, 2012 for the election of the Federal President and was elected to the spokespersons of the LAG Left Christians in Hesse in 2015.
