Franz Stickan

Franz Albert Karl Friedrich Stickan (born July 5, 1887 in Nordenham ; † December 3, 1953 in Bremen ) was a German shipping company director of DG Neptun .

Stickan grew up in Nordenham. He completed an apprenticeship with the steamship company "Neptun" in Bremen and worked as an assistant from 1905. He served in World War I and returned from British captivity in 1919. At DG Neptun he was now an assistant in the chartering department. In 1922 he was appointed authorized signatory and in 1923 he became deputy director of the shipping company.

In 1925 he took over the management of the aspiring shipping company as sole chairman of the board , which under his leadership became the largest shipping company in European coastal traffic. At the beginning of the Second World War , the Neptun again had 71 ships, and in the first years of the war 87 ships with a carrying capacity of 149,000 tons.

Stickan began to rebuild the liner service with the shipping company from around 1948 ; first in Europe and from 1951 to Africa. In 1953, when he died, the DG “Neptun” again had 33 seagoing ships and four barges.

Further memberships and offices

Stickan was represented on the supervisory boards of other companies and a member of the transport committee of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce . From 1945 to 1953 he was the successor to Hermann Christian Helms jun. Chairman of the Bremer Rhederverein ; Werner Vinnen succeeded him in the office.

Honors

  • The Franz-Stickan Street in Bremen- Woltmershausen was named in 2001 after him.
