The Edegger-Tax Hofbäckerei is the oldest existing bakery in Graz . Its roots go back to the 14th century. The bakery is known for the richly decorated facade of the street shop in Hofgasse in Graz. The product range includes traditional baked goods from the Austro-Hungarian monarchy as well as special products for people with celiac disease .

history

The original bakery, which was first mentioned in a document in 1569, probably dates back to the 14th century and was located at Sporgasse No. 15 near today's staircase church .

In 1787 Mathias Tax took over the bakery. It was not until 1880 that Franz Tax  III acquired. the bakery at its current location and expanded it into a respected bakery. On the occasion of an imperial visit by Franz Joseph in Graz in 1883, the Tax bakery supplied the farm table. As they were able to convince the crown prince couple of the quality in 1887, the owner received the title of kuk court baker in 1888 .

The carved wooden portal of the shop, which has been preserved to this day, was made in 1896 by the Graz carpenter Anton Irschik.

The business was badly affected by the two world wars. It was only after the Second World War that Franz Edegger, who had married Herta Tax, managed to get the bakery going again. After that, Erich Edegger , who was also Graz Vice Mayor, and his wife Walheide continued the tradition of the court bakery. Today the company is run by his son Robert Edegger.
