In 1977 he qualified as a professor at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne ( venia legendi for sociology).

From 1977 to 1978 he worked as a private lecturer at the University of Cologne until he became professor of sociology at the economics and social science faculty of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel from 1978 to 1990 . From 1981 to 1983 he was their dean . In 1986 he accepted a one-year visiting professorship in the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago . research

Franz Urban Pappi established himself on a national and international level as a professor of sociology in the field of empirical social and societal research. His interdisciplinary work in the field of political sociology also resulted in a high reputation for political science, especially in the field of empirical election research, quantitative policy network analysis and empirical policy research.

He developed a variety of internationally recognized methodological, theoretical and content-related contributions to relevant social science issues. It is even more important that he views these contributions from the theoretical point of view of different social science disciplines. He used a variety of methodological analyzes, also beyond the existing boundaries of the individual social science disciplines. Among other things, he successfully used the method of quantitative network analysis not only for the structural analysis of social systems, but also for political systems and decision-making processes.

He also made some key contributions to the development of quantitative policy network analysis, which is now one of the tried and tested standard methods of empirical policy research in political science. In addition to his interdisciplinary orientation, his connection between theory and empiricism is characteristic of his scientific work, as is the empirical application of theory and the verification of theory against reality.

Pappi sees theory as an instrument to learn something about social reality .
