Franz Unterforsthuber (born June 3, 1876 in Kraiburg am Inn , district Lohen; † December 29, 1961 in Traunstein ) was a German department store owner.

Career

Unterforsthuber grew up in poor conditions in the Kraiburg district of Guttenburg. In 1908 he opened a people's bazaar in Traunstein in the house of the wine merchant Müller at Bahnhofstrasse 16 . After the end of the First World War, he acquired the Hotel Zur Post from Guido Schnepf in 1918 and converted it into the department store that still exists today. The building at Stadtplatz 34 has been the company's headquarters since 1921.

The department store, popularly called department store UFO, developed into a well-known shopping attraction for the whole of Chiemgau . In 1967 the first escalator outside of Munich was installed there. Unterforsthuber initially ran the department store together with his wife Mathilde, his son Franz junior and their daughter-in-law. After his death, his son and his wife Fanni ran the department store.

Unterforsthuber showed a special social commitment throughout his life. During high inflation he organized wood donations and gift tables for the needy. After the Second World War he supported the renovation and expansion of the Buchfellner Chapel and headed the Caritas Association for more than a decade. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Traunstein “because of his exemplary participation in community life in the city and because of his special merits in the charitable field”.

He was an avid advocate of the teachings of Sebastian Kneipp . The Kneipp facility at the foot of the Wartberg in Traunstein bears his name.
