Franz Waldöstl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Hubert Waldöstl baptismal name: Franciscus Hubertus Waldöstl (born November 3, 1793 in Neudek ; † March 10, 1871 ibid) was a Bohemian city judge, tax collector, trader, school supervisor and rifle captain of Neudek. He initiated the construction of the Neudeker Kreuzweg.

Life

Franz Waldöstl was the son of the merchant and ringsmith Johann Joseph Waldöstl Jun. (* 1746 in Neudek; † June 26, 1829 there) who probably held the office of city judge until 1820 and his wife Anna Elisabeth nee. Forester († June 9, 1814 in Neudek) from Rothau. His twin brother died shortly after giving birth. Members of the family, which had been based in Neudek since the beginning of the 17th century, worked as blacksmiths for generations and later also worked as carpenters. His grandfather, the blacksmith Ferdinand Waldöstl (* 1700 in Neudek), was mayor in 1750. There is a legend of the family in several variants, which tells of the origin of the name of the city on the one hand and the unusual family name Waldesel , which the family originally carried, on the other .

Franz Waldöstl learned the trade of a merchant and traded in general goods in Neudek. He was the inventor of a vinegar-making apparatus. Until the implementation of the municipal regulations in 1842, he held the office of city judge free of charge. Since the old town hall had become dilapidated during his tenure, he tried to raise the financial means to build a new town hall. He also worked as a school supervisor and was Neudeker rifle captain. Because of the construction of a state road to Neuhammer in 1829, the Neudek snipers had to give up their old shooting range. But since the shooting club's treasury was used up for the purchase of new property, Waldöstl, as leader of the Neudeker snipers, vouched for a property loan with his assets. His merit is above all the establishment of the well-known Neudeker Kreuzweg, which was built between 1851 and 1858. The financial basis for this was formed by the estate of Neudek's citizen widow Maria Anna Häckl from whose fortune Waldöstl, who acted as her executor, founded a Kreuzweg foundation. In 1866 Waldöstl began the celebration of the golden wedding. He died in 1871 at the age of 78.
