Franziska Ehmcke

Franziska Ehmcke (* 1947 in Hamburg ) is a German Japanologist .

Life

She studied Japanese Studies, Sinology and General and Comparative Linguistics at the University of Hamburg . From 1973 to 1974 she had a DAAD doctoral scholarship at Tōhoku University . After completing her doctorate in Japanology in Hamburg in 1978, she was a research assistant at the Department of Japanology at the East Asian Department of the University of Cologne from 1978 to 1986 . From 1986 to 1993 she was a freelance translator and author. From 1994 to 2012 she taught as a professor at the University of Cologne , head of the Japanese Studies department at the East Asian Seminar and board member of the CAS - Center for Asian Studies (formerly the Center for Inter- and Transcultural Studies CITS) of the Philosophical Faculty.

Her main research interests are cultural studies and the intellectual history of Japan. She published numerous articles on culture, everyday culture, art and religion in Japan.
