Franciscans of Renewal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Franciscans of the Renewal ( English : Franciscan Friars of the Renewal ) are a Catholic religious order , which as a diocesan congregation is subordinate to the Archbishop of New York .

The community emerged in April 1987 from a small group of Capuchins who wanted to radically live the apostolate of poverty. Already represented internationally today, there is also a sister branch, the Franciscan Sisters of Renewal . The most important branches are in New York in the Bronx and in London , where they are active in pastoral care for the homeless and look after the local youth groups . They are also committed to drug addicts, especially during their withdrawal, and to prostitutes who support them in an unwanted pregnancy in the form of encouragement not to have an abortion and to find their way back to a regular life.

The media became aware of them, among other things, through videos in the social networks, which showed the religious playing basketball or skateboarding in the New York Bronx.

Some brothers of the Franciscans of Renewal, among others, organize a music festival with the Schoenstatt Movement and the Catholic Youth Office called "Gig", which stands for "God is good". Rock, hip-hop, dance music and cajun music are played at the music festival. Entry to the festival is free and donations are requested.

At the end of 2016, the Franciscans of Renewal were recognized by Pope Francis as an institute of papal law.
