from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family Jesus, Maria and Joseph ( English : Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph , Italian : Suore Francescane della Sacra Famiglia di Gesù, Maria e Giuseppe , Order abbreviation : OSF ) are a third order of St. Francis . The religious order for women was founded in 1864 by Josephine Termehr (1831-1892) in Herford and is also known as the Franciscan Sisters of Dubuque .

history

Josephine Termehr (mother Xavier) had been in Herford together with other sisters from the Cross since 1860. The sisters were called back in 1864, but Mother Xavier stayed in Herford and founded the Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Family Jesus, Maria and Joseph on November 4, 1864 . The Kulturkampf in Germany in 1875 meant that the 28 Franciscan Sisters had to leave Herford and moved to Iowa City in the United States .

They built the first Catholic orphanage in Iowa City . This facility was converted into an orphanage for the Diocese of Dubuque by Bishop John Joseph Hennessy . Thus, in 1878, the Franciscan community moved to Dubuque, Iowa . In 1900 the sisters established another branch in Bancroft, Iowa , where they taught at the parish school of St. John and also took on pastoral duties .

On July 1, 1905, the congregation received its confirmation and was accepted into the fraternity of the Franciscans ; on December 2, 1914, it was recognized as a congregation under papal law and received papal approbation on July 15, 1925 by Pope Pius XI.

organization

Today the sisters perform their predominantly apostolic duties in the USA and in Honduras . The General House has its seat in Dubuque, from here the 367 members are looked after and the 133 facilities are administered.
