The Archduke Johann Kohlröschen ( Nigritella archiducis-joannis ) is a species of orchid that grows in a few locations in the Dead Mountains , in the Dachstein , the Karawanken , the Koralpe - i.e. in the Austrian federal states of Styria , Upper Austria , Salzburg and Carinthia - as well as in the Slovenian Triglav -National Park is endemic . Some authors also regard it as a subspecies of the red cabbage rose and is then called Nigritella rubra subsp. archiducis-joannis (Teppner & E. Klein) H. Baumann & R. Lorenz .
description
The inflorescence is spherical. The flowers are light to dark flesh-colored. The lip, lateral petals and central sepal are stretched straight forward and not spreading. The lip is 8 millimeters long and narrows in a saddle shape 2 to 4 millimeters above the base. The lateral sepals are slightly wider than the lateral petals. The spur is 1.4 millimeters long. Reproduction is asexual.
The flowering period extends from July to August.
Distribution and location
This species was first described as endemic in the north-eastern Limestone Alps in the Dead Mountains . In 1996 the species was discovered in a few locations in the Dachstein Group (Land Salzburg), in 2006 in the Hochobir (Karawanken, Carinthia) and the Styrian Koralpe, and in 2008 in the Triglav National Park in Slovenia. It grows on subalpine-alpine limestone grasslands at altitudes between 1800 and 2000 m above sea level.
