St. Bernardine Monastery and St. Magnus Parish Church in Lenzfried

The Franciscan Monastery of St. Bernardine is a former monastery of the Franciscan Observants in Lenzfried , a district of Kempten (Allgäu) . The monastery, founded in 1461, is dedicated to St. Bernardine of Siena . The Franciscan convent of St. Anna is on the other side of the street .

history

In 1458 the parish priest Leonhard Märklin came up with the idea of establishing a Franciscan convent , which was soon settled by five friars. The order quickly became popular with the population. In 1461, Ulrich Rist, a chaplain to St. Stephan, acquired an estate in Lenzfried to build a Franciscan monastery, which belonged to the Upper German or Strasbourg province ( Provincia Argentina ). In 1466 the first monastery church and the convent were consecrated to St. Bernard by the auxiliary bishop of Augsburg.

Because of the unrest of the Schmalkaldic and German Peasants' War , the Franciscans were withdrawn from the monastery in 1548. From then on, Franciscan nuns who had fled the imperial city lived in the convent building until 1643 . In 1649 a Franciscan convent with twelve brothers moved into the old monastery building. The friars were now active in pastoral care in the parish. In the same year the Franciscan Sisters, who shared the building with the brothers for a short time, moved to the Franciscan convent of St. Anna opposite.

In 1663 three new altars were consecrated in the monastery church. A conversion to a three-wing complex was built in 1683 by Hans Mayer. A new high altar was purchased from Lechfeld Monastery in 1748 . In the years 1765/67 the monastery was rebuilt under Joseph Galler. The monastery was finally abandoned in 1805 in the course of secularization . The church and monastery complex were preserved. The monastery church of St. Magnus became the parish church, the parsonage and in 1814 a military hospital moved into the earlier monastery buildings, later a school.

The church tower, actually unusual for Franciscan monasteries, was built by Hugo Höfl in the years 1892/3. A parish community has existed with the neighboring parish of Ortisei since 2002 .
