St. Ulrich Church in Kempten

The Catholic parish church of St. Ulrich in Kempten im Allgäu is a church building in the eastern part of the city of Lindenberg. Due to the high church tower, it shapes the district on the Lindenberg, visible from afar. The executive architect was the government builder Willy Hornung from Ottobeuren . The purist reinforced concrete church influenced the further construction of concrete churches in Kempten.

The church is dedicated to St. Ulrich von Augsburg .

history

After the Second World War , many deported people came to Kempten. In order to quickly create living space for them, the Kempten housing associations built row houses on the Lindenberg on the site of the Roman city of Cambodunum . In order to create a parish church for the newly created district, the construction of the St. Ulrichs Church was planned from 1955.

The former Lerpscher Hof was quickly chosen as the location; the city gave the property to the new parish free of charge. The shell of the church should actually be finished by 1960, but there were delays. Josef Zimmermann was only able to consecrate the church three years later in autumn . At the beginning of 1964, the parish of St. Ulrich was officially established by Bishop Josef Stimpfle .

In autumn 1978 an organ was added to the equipment, which completed the church.

An examination of the building fabric towards the end of the 1990s revealed that the concrete structure was in great need of renovation. Demolition was considered for cost reasons, also because the community had become smaller in the meantime, among other things due to the withdrawal of the Bundeswehr . At the urgent request of the architect's heirs, who could invoke the copyright, the 7th civil senate of the Augsburg Higher Regional Court stopped the demolition planning with an injunction. In its decision of December 2000, the court reprimanded the decay of the building that had been accepted for decades. The church was subsequently refurbished and built into the interior for flexible use. On the 4th Sunday in Advent 2004, services were celebrated again for the first time in a long time.
