Life

education

Josef Zimmermann was born on March 19, 1901 in Langwied, a small village west of Munich, as the son of a farmer. After visiting the school , he studied theology and was on 31 October 1926 a priest in his home diocese of Augsburg ordained . In the following time he looked after various parishes, including the Kissing parish , whose bombing Josef Zimmermann was able to prevent through negotiations with the Allied forces .

theologian

In two writings in 1941 and 1949 he put forward the thesis that the divine relationship of the Holy Spirit to the Father and Son can also be easily explained to simple believers: “Eros and Amor are masculine, agape and Caritas Feminina. Are we allowed to apply these two polar activities for the good, which play such a great role in human life, to the divine life? We are allowed to, because 'God created man as his image. He created it as God's image. He made her male and female. ' Why should we not read from this sentence that man is an image of God not only as an individual or even only as a man, but precisely in the peculiarity of his sexual two-unity? We do not make man the standard of God, but seek to interpret the riddle of man from the eternal, infinite as from the original source and the fullness of all life ”(1949, 47). By calling God's Holy Spirit power female, he was the first (but not the word) to introduce the term goddess into Catholic thought, at that time it was publicly undisputed because the revolution was not noticed, later forgotten by feminist theology. Living in the Germanikum during the council, he passed on his faith in many conversations.

The Second Vatican Council fell during Josef Zimmermann's term of office . As a participant in all four session periods, he was one of the bishops who could experience and help shape the entire council. Josef Zimmermann can be counted among the camp of progressive forces who demanded a reform and opening of the church , as can be seen in his diary entries. He wrote these for the Augsburg church newspaper, later they were published as a book (title: Erlebtes Konzil ).

On March 1, 1972, Pope Paul VI. the resignation of the now 71-year-old Josef Zimmermann. On December 29, 1976 Josef Zimmermann died in Augsburg at the age of almost 76 and was buried a few days later in Augsburg Cathedral .
