Johann Baptist Keller , von Keller from 1818 (* May 16, 1774 in Salem , † October 17, 1845 in Bartenstein ), was a Roman Catholic theologian and first bishop in the Rottenburg diocese established in 1828 . As such, he was also a member of the Württemberg state parliament .

Life

Johann Baptist Keller was born as the son of the court chamber councilor and syndic of the Reichsabbey Salem Kaspar Keller. After studying theology in Dillingen and at the Benedictine University in Salzburg from 1793 to 1797, Keller was ordained a priest on June 10, 1797 in Salzburg . After pastoral work in several parishes, he was appointed to the Spiritual Council of Württemberg in 1808 , and he was appointed city pastor of Stuttgart. Around 1815 he became provicer for the Catholic parts of Württemberg ( Neuwuerttemberg ) in support of Bishop Franz Karl von Hohenlohe .

On August 4, 1816, Keller in Rome was appointed auxiliary bishop in Augsburg and titular bishop of Euroea in Epiro by Pope Pius VII . The episcopal ordination received his Pope Pius VII himself. Co-consecrators were Cardinal Francesco Bertazzoli and the Curia Bishop Giuseppe Bartolomeo Menocchio OESA .

In 1818 King Wilhelm awarded him the Commentary Cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown . In 1837 he received the Knight's Cross of the Friedrich Order .

In 1819, Keller became vicar general with his seat in Rottenburg and as such a member with the right to vote in the Württemberg state assemblies of 1819, which ended with the adoption of the constitution of the Kingdom of Württemberg. After the establishment of the Rottenburg diocese in 1821, Keller became its first diocesan bishop on May 21, 1828 . With his offices as vicar general and bishop was connected to a mandate in the second chamber of the Württemberg state parliament from 1819 until his death in 1845.

He found his final resting place in the bishop's crypt in the Sülchen cemetery church .
