Manfred Müller (Bishop)
Manfred Müller (born November 15, 1926 in Augsburg ; † May 20, 2015 in Mallersdorf-Pfaffenberg ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Regensburg .
Life
Bishop Manfred Müller attended elementary school and high school in his hometown (today: Holbein-Gymnasium ). In 1943 he was drafted first as an anti-aircraft helper, later in the Wehrmacht and as a soldier in World War II . He came into British captivity , from which he was released in 1946. He then studied philosophy at the Philosophical-Theological University in Dillingen and Catholic theology at the Ducal Georgianum at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich . After being ordained a deacon on July 22, 1951, he received the sacrament of ordination on June 24, 1952 in Munich. From 1955 to 1972 he worked as a religion teacher and director of studies in Augsburg.
Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 3, 1972 titular bishop of Iubaltiana and auxiliary bishop in Augsburg . The bishop of Augsburg, Josef Stimpfle , donated him his episcopal ordination on March 25th of the same year in the Augsburg Cathedral . Co- consecrators were the then Regensburg Bishop Rudolf Graber and Passau Bishop Antonius Hofmann . His episcopal motto was “proclaim the truth in love” (Eph. 4:15). Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Regensburg on June 16, 1982; the inauguration took place on September 18, 1982.
In 1985 he was appointed Grand Officer of the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilien Cardinal de Fürstenberg and invested on May 11, 1985 by Franz Cardinal Hengsbach , Grand Prior of the German Lieutenancy .
On January 15, 2002, Pope John Paul II accepted Bishop Manfred Müller's resignation, which he had submitted when he reached the age of 75. Müller has since lived in Mallersdorf Abbey , where he died on May 20, 2015 at the age of 88 as a result of a stroke he suffered in 2014. His grave is located in the bishop's burial place under the Regensburg Cathedral. His successor as Bishop in Regensburg was today's Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller .
Act
Even before his time as bishop, he was moved by subjects related to school and religious instruction . Initially active as a chaplain in Starnberg , he taught for seven years at the vocational school in Augsburg, three at the Oberrealschule in Lindenberg and six at the Holbein-Gymnasium in Augsburg. Most recently he held the position of specialist advisor for Catholic religious teaching in southern Bavaria . During his time as Bishop of Regensburg he was a speaker for school issues at the Freising Bishops' Conference , responsible for example for the approval of the books used in Bavarian religious instruction. Since 1983 he has headed the administrative board of the Catholic Schools for Bavaria .
In addition, he was a member since 1972 and from 1982 to 1992 chairman of the commission for questions of science and culture, since 1991 chairman of the commission for education and school of the German bishops' conference and from 1981 to 1986 member of the journalistic commission. From 1978 to 1987 Müller was chairman of the jury for the award of the Catholic Children's and Youth Book Prize of the German Bishops' Conference and from 1982 to 1986 President of the OIEC . In 2001, the Regensburg Bishop Manfred Müller School was named after him, for which he donated a six-figure sum from his private fortune.
In 1992 Müller ended the pilgrimage “ Deggendorfer Gnad ”, which dates back to a pogrom in 1338 , after the diocese of Regensburg had previously delayed this step for decades. In his pastoral word on this, he unequivocally distanced himself from anti-Semitic falsifications of history and the centuries-long hostility towards Jews of many Christians.
While he tried to take a mediating and neutral position in the political dispute over the Wackersdorf reprocessing plant , which divided the Upper Palatinate population, at the end of the 1990s he took a clear position in favor of the Catholic Church remaining in pregnancy conflict counseling .
After the political change in neighboring Bohemia , Müller became involved in supporting the dioceses of Prague and Pilsen . In Pilsen he sponsored the newly built Catholic grammar school, in Prague the new building of the first Catholic church after more than fifty years.
