Franz Xaver Eberle

Franz Xaver Eberle (born July 4, 1874 in Augsburg ; † November 19, 1951 there ) was a German Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Augsburg .

Career

Franz Eberle was the son of the master bookbinder Alois E. Eberle and his wife Franziska, geb. Cobbler. He studied Catholic theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and attended the Ducal Georgianum as a seminary . On July 18, 1897, he was ordained a priest for the diocese of Augsburg . He then became a chaplain in Neu-Ulm and Neuburg an der Donau . From 1907 to 1912 Eberle was canon of the chapter at the Theatinerkirche in Munich . In 1910 he received his doctorate in political science (Dr. oec. Publ.), In 1912 his doctorate in theology (Dr. theol.) And became an associate professor for moral theology at the University of Passau .

In the course of the First World War, Eberle worked in military chaplaincy from 1914 . So he was chaplain at the I. Bavarian Reserve Corps and in 1915 field care consultant at the inspection of the 6th Army as well as pastor at the 6th mobile commandant of the 14th Army High Command . In 1916 he was accepted into the Augsburg cathedral chapter and appointed vicar general in 1927 . In 1930 he was appointed diocese administrator of the diocese of Augsburg.

On June 2, 1934 Eberle was by Pope Pius XI. Appointed titular bishop of Zaliche and auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Augsburg. He received the episcopal ordination through the Augsburg diocesan bishop Josef Kumpfmüller . Co-consecrators were Johann Baptist Schauer , Auxiliary Bishop in Munich and Freising, and Rottenburg Auxiliary Bishop Franz Josef Fischer .

Eberle published writings on moral theological , homiletic and economic topics, including "Work motives in the light of Christian ethics" (1912) and "Catholic economic morality " (1921).

Eberle's role in the Third Reich

Eberle was positive about National Socialism and is also considered an informant for the Secret State Police . He met twice in person with Hitler in December 1937 and March 1938 . In a letter to Hitler in March 1938, he wrote:

“I love my country ardently and make myself available to my leader at all times. I am delighted that on December 6th, 1937, I was granted to stand face to face with the man to whom the enlarged Germany owes so much. Take, my Fiihrer, the assurance of my greatest admiration, in which I call myself the Reich Chancellor, most devoted Dr. Franz Xaver Eberle, Auxiliary Bishop of Augsburg. "

On the occasion of the upcoming referendum of April 1938 on the annexation of Austria , Eberle said:

"When could the bishops invite you to say 'yes' more easily and happily than when it is a matter of a patriotic act of the greatest format, about our enlarged Germany."
