Josef Grünwald

Josef Michael Grünwald (born August 22, 1936 in Augsburg ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman, auxiliary bishop emeritus in the diocese of Augsburg and former provost of the cathedral . He held the office of diocesan administrator twice .

Life

From 1954 to 1956 Grünwald studied philosophy at the Philosophical College of the Benedictines in St. Stephan in Augsburg and then from 1956 to 1960 Catholic theology in Dillingen . On February 22, 1959, he became a deacon , and on 29 May in 1960 by Bishop Joseph Kumpfmüller for ordained priests .

Between 1960 and 1961 he was an assistant priest in Welden . From 1961 to 1964 he was also city chaplain in St. Max, Augsburg. From 1964 he was cathedral chaplain in Augsburg for two years. On October 3, 1966 he was appointed cathedral vicar and secretary of the vicar general . From March 1975 he was president of the Augsburg pilgrims' association. On January 1, 1981, he was appointed Ordinary Councilor and Deputy Vicar General. On November 1, 1982, he was appointed Cathedral Chapter . The appointment to the Summus Custos of the cathedral in Augsburg took place on May 8, 1986. On November 1, 1993 he was appointed dean of the cathedral before he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Augsburg and titular bishop of Fronta on February 21, 1995 by Pope John Paul II . On March 18, 1995, he was ordained bishop by Bishop Viktor Josef Dammertz OSB . The former Augsburg Bishop Josef Stimpfle and Auxiliary Bishop Rudolf Schmid were co-consecrators . His motto is: “Testificari Evangelium Gratiae Dei” (“To testify to the gospel of the grace of God”). Bishop Dammertz appointed Josef Grünwald as episcopal vicar for the social and charitable area in the diocese of Augsburg. In March 1995 he became a member of the journalistic commission of the German Bishops 'Conference and the Caritas Commission of the German Bishops' Conference. On September 1, 1996 he was appointed provost of the cathedral. On January 15, 1999, he was appointed Episcopal Vicar for Church and Culture.

From June 2004 to October 1, 2005 he was diocesan administrator , until Bishop Walter Mixa succeeded Bishop Emeritus Viktor Josef Dammertz.

On May 8, 2010 (the same day on which the Pope accepted Bishop Walter Mixa's offer of resignation ), the Augsburg cathedral chapter re-elected Grünwald as diocesan administrator for the period of the sedis vacancy , which ended with the appointment of Konrad Zdarsa as bishop in October 2010 . Immediately after his election, Grünwald wrote an open letter to confreres, church workers and believers.

On October 4, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. the resignation from the office of auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Augsburg submitted by Josef Grünwald for reasons of age.
