Carme Mateu i Quintana , Spanish also Carmen Mateu Quintana (born February 28, 1936 in Barcelona ; † January 23, 2018 ibid), was a Catalan patron of the arts. She was president of the Associació Cultural del Castell de Peralada , which runs the Peralada palace complex , and organizer of the Peralada International Music Festival . Carme Mateu was the daughter of the industrialist, politician and Barcoleneser mayor Miquel Mateu i Pla and the granddaughter of the Barcolonese industrialist Damià Mateu i Bisa .

life and work

Damià Mateu i Bisa, who among other things had co-founded the Hispano-Suiza company , also bought and restored the Peralada Castle in 1923 . Carmen Mateu inherited this property from her father and, through the Foundation Associació Cultural del Castell de Peralada, organized, among other things, the International Classical Music Festival of Peralada as well as the museums and library integrated in the castle.

In 1957 she married the businessman Artur Suqué i Puig , the founder of the company Inverama - Casinos de Catalunya . This marriage resulted in three children, Isabel, Javier and Miguel. Today, after the death of Carme Mateus in January 2018, they jointly manage the Associació Cultural del Castell de Peralada Foundation .

Carme Mateu has received numerous awards. In 2000 she was awarded the Creu-de-Sant-Jordi by the Catalan government for outstanding achievements in the field of culture. In 2009 she received the gold medal of the Cercle del Liceu in Barcelona . The Spanish government awarded her the gold medal in the field of fine arts in 2017 .
