The Festival de Peralada or officially the Festival Internacional de Música Castell de Peralada is a festival of classical music that has been celebrated annually in July and August at Peralada Castle since 1987 .

place

The festival takes place in the medieval town of Peralada , between the Costa Brava and the city of Figueres . The seat of the festival, the medieval Peralada Castle, was acquired in 1923 by the Barcelona industrialist Miquel Mateu i Pla and currently houses the Peralada casino, a glass and wine museum, a large library and a Gothic monastery and church. The place is about 150 kilometers northeast of Barcelona. It is easily accessible via the motorway or the AVE express train from Figueres. The journey from the nearest airports Girona or Perpignan takes about 30 minutes each.

history

The art patron Carme Mateu founded this classical music festival in 1987 with her husband Artur Suqué . Since the death of Carme Mateu in January 2018, their children Javier, Miguel and Isabel Suqué i Mateu have run the Castell de Peralada Foundation , which also organizes the festival. Larger concert events take place as "Nights in Spanish Gardens" in the auditorium of the palace gardens. Recitals, chamber concerts and small-format operas take place in the Gothic church of El Carme .

The festival is dedicated to large voices, symphony, choir and chamber concerts, operas, as well as cross-genre music, theater, dance, jazz and pop music events. In 1992 the festival joined the European Festivals Association (EFA). In addition to classical music festivals such as those in Bayreuth, Florence and Salzburg, it consolidated its name and importance. In 2006 it also joined the Associació Espanyola de Teatres, Festivals i Temporades d'Òpera , the Spanish Association of Theater, Festival and Opera . Since 2007, the Peralada Festival has also been a member of the Associació Espanyola de Festivals de Música Clàssica , the Spanish Society of Classical Music Festivals .

meaning

As an art lover, Carme Mateu placed great trust in the abilities of the music festival's organizational and artistic teams from the start. She conveyed her close relationship of trust with artists such as Montserrat Caballé , José Carreras , Jaume Aragall , Placido Domingo and Teresa Berganza to the festival. She achieved that the festival was and is associated with the name of great musicians such as Xavier Montsalvatge , Albert García Demestres or Albert Guinovart and great theater professionals such as Mario Gas , Calixte Bieito or Joan Anton Rechi .

Carme Mateu showed great admiration and respect for every artistic expression. Above all, she valued artistic creativity. Through her decisions, she herself set new avant-garde tendencies in the performing arts. A special concern for her has always been the promotion of young artists.

The continuing artistic success of the Peralada Festival must be seen against this background.
