The Stiftsgymnasium der Piaristen Kempten is a former branch of the Piarists in Kempten (Allgäu) , a town in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia .

history

The settlement was initiated in 1752 by Engelbert Syrg von Syrgenstein , Prince Abbot von Kempten, and dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization . The Piarists did not have a monastery in the strict sense; They lived in the Stiftsgymnasium, which as a Latin school had a tradition going back to the 17th century. The structure of the collegiate high school was attached to the abbot's residence. In 1762 expansion plans were made. The number of teachers should be doubled and another five people should be added. Apparently these plans were not implemented.

After the end of the Princely Monastery, the Piarists were replaced by secular teachers. The building was used for the Royal Bavarian Gymnasium (today Carl-von-Linde-Gymnasium Kempten ) until 1864 . After the collegiate high school was demolished, the Catholic rectory was built there.

student

The Latin school was founded so that the nobles could receive school education from the monastery. In addition, the sons of the aristocratic court officials and also pupils from families of the inhabitants of the collegiate town were able to attend school from the beginning. Children from poor families could receive a scholarship.

The catchment area was initially limited to the territory of the monastery. Over the years it expanded to the entire Allgäu and neighboring areas. For the year 1731, seven middle-class students from Kempten, 11 students from the Stiftland, two more from the Allgäu, six students from Swabia, two students from Switzerland and one student from Tyrol are known. Foreign students could live in a boarding school. In 1803 there were six high school classes and two basic school classes with 41 students and five teachers.
