The Francis School Wilhelmshaven is a high school in a Catholic sponsorship . In the 2019/2020 school year, around 350 pupils will attend grades 5 to 10 and will be taught by around 40 teachers.

The school has two courses (three courses in grades 9 and 10) and is run as an all-day school. The student body comes from the city and the surrounding communities. Since it is a denominational school, only up to 50% non-Catholic students are accepted.

Since 1982 the school has been called "Franziskusschule Wilhelmshaven ". It bears the name of St. Francis , the founder of the Franciscan order . He lived from 1182 to 1226 as the son of a rich cloth merchant, but decided to live in poverty and in the service of others. In every plant and in every animal, but above all in every human being, he saw God's creature and gift.

The life and work of the namesake should also be the guideline for the educational work at the school. Especially his mindfulness for creation, simplicity, joy and humility should be a role model in everyday school life. The name day of St. Francis on October 4th is always a special day of celebration and action at the school.

history

The school was established in 1901 as a state primary school . After the Second World War , the school was run by the Catholic authorities, but the buildings remained in the hands of the city until 1987.

In the mid-1970s, it was expanded to include an orientation level, and later it was converted into a secondary school. From 1989 to 1991 the school buildings were extensively renovated and redesigned. After the abandonment and demolition of the Peterstrasse site, the entire school can be found at the Mitscherlichstrasse site.
