The Franzosengraben is a drainage ditch in the area of the city of Magdeburg .

location

The ditch runs east of the Elbe and begins in the area of the Randau-Calenberge district a little east of the Schwarzer Krüger pool and initially runs in an easterly direction parallel to the path to Randau. It then continues north through extensive agricultural areas. It flows west past the Kiebitzberg , crosses the Elbe cycle path and then reaches the Kreuzhorst . It continues to traverse mainly in a northerly direction through the area of forest designated as a nature reserve and ultimately flows into the Old Elbe . Several smaller ditches open into the French trench. The ditch runs along the entire stretch on the eastern side of the Elbe dike facing away from the Elbe and drains this area. The length of the French trench is about four kilometers.

history

In order to drain the area, the trench was dug in the winter of 1915/1916. The work was carried out by French prisoners of war who were housed in the Louisenthal inn in Pechau . In the vernacular , the ditch was therefore soon called the Franzosengraben, which later became the official name.
