Fraps (composed of Fra mes p he s econd ) is a screencast - and real-time video recording program for DirectX - and OpenGL applications. It is widely used to determine computer performance in games as well as to record computer game scenes. The program is very popular with amateur machinima filmmakers. Fraps is only available as a purchase version through digital distribution .

On May 19, 2003, version 1.9d was released as freeware. The current demo version places a non-removable Fraps symbol as a digital watermark on the upper corner of the video and the recording time is limited to 30 seconds. In the full version, videos are recorded without the Fraps logo. In addition, the maximum resolution is 7680 × 4800 and the refresh rate is 120 frames per second. When recording is activated, the frame rate of Fraps is adapted to that of the program to be recorded (usually 30 fps). Although 30 fps is the average, even poorly performing computers or computers with low data transfer rates as well as extensive programs can drastically reduce the frame rate and lead to jerky recordings.

Screenshots

The recording of individual screenshots is usually provided as a function by the operating system or the graphical user interface . If this does not work for a program because it uses graphic programming interfaces such as DirectX or OpenGL , screenshots can be made with Fraps.
