Frasil (also Farāsila, Frassila, Ferasilah, Frasla, Frassla, Frassola, Fersil, Frehsil, Färsel) is a weight measure that was used in many countries bordering the Indian Ocean from the early 16th century to the 20th century . The name is probably derived from the Portuguese word parcela (part). Weight was usually determined by Bahar and man . By default, the Frasil corresponded to the 20th part of a Bahār or the 10th part of a man, but there were many local variations.

East Africa

  • in Mozambique , one Frasil was equivalent to a commercial weight of 5.443 kilograms.
  • In Zanzibar , where the Frasil corresponded to 12 men, he weighed 16.166 kg.

Arabia

  • in mocha 1 frasil = 1/15 Bahār = 10 men = 20 ratl = 300 Ūqīya = 13.61 kilograms or 13.29 kilograms.
  • in Hodeida 1 Fresil / Frasil = 1/40 Bahār = 9.855 kilograms (for coffee)
  • in Bait al-Faqih 1 Frasil = 1/40 Bahār = 10 men = 20 Ratl = 300 Ūqīya = 9.25 kilograms.
  • in Jeddah 1 Frasil = 1/10 Bahār = 10 men = 50 Ratl = 750 Ūqīya = 8.30 kilograms.
