The Darmstadt women's clinic (also: Otto-Bartning-Bau ) is a master building in Darmstadt .

Architecture and history

In 1951, the Darmstadt “Master Buildings” designed by well-known architects from home and abroad were presented to the public as part of the “Man and Space” exhibition. The women's clinic, which opened in 1954, is one of the five “master buildings” built in Darmstadt.

With the construction of the new women's clinic, the architects Otto Bartning and Otto Dörzbach wanted to organize the existing clinic buildings on the site. The curved structure was intended as the “backbone” for the entire development; but it was only partially carried out.

The six-story stacked building has a gable roof . The building gains its shape through the visualization of the different room depths to the outside, the staircase at the head end, the recessed attic with surrounding balconies and the delicate facade division.

The modern and functional equipment, the light colors, the advanced soundproofing and the large windows facing south to the garden were unusual for the time.

The relief mosaic in the entrance area of the women's clinic is remarkable .

As a typical example of the architecture of the 1950s in Darmstadt, the women's clinic was placed under a preservation order.
