Fraunhofer is an impact crater on the south-eastern edge of the front of the moon , immediately south of the Furnerius crater . The rim of the crater is moderately eroded, interrupted in the northwest by the Fraunhofer V secondary crater . The inside of the crater is flat.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the German optician and physicist Joseph von Fraunhofer .
