Fred John Ascani
Fred John Ascani (born 1917 in Beloit , Wisconsin , † March 28, 2010 in Alexandria , Virginia ) was an American major general in the United States Air Force and test pilot .
Life
In 1937 he began officer training at the United States Military Academy in West Point (New York) . In 1941 he became a second lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers . After participating in World War II in Europe, it continued to be used in Germany. In 1951, Ascani became deputy commander of the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base . Between 1961 and 1962 he was in charge of the development of the Mach 3 bomber North American XB-70 Valkyrie .
In 1964 he was promoted to major general , which was his last. Ascani retired in 1973 after 32 years of service.
His awards include the Legion of Merit , the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal , the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Croix de guerre with a palm branch.
