Fred G. Becker (economist)

Fred G. Becker (* 1955 in Balkhausen ) is a German economist. He holds the chair for business administration, in particular human resources, organization and management at Bielefeld University and is the initiator and chairman of the Institute for Family Businesses.

Live and act

After completing his secondary school leaving certificate and a commercial bank apprenticeship, Becker obtained his university entrance qualification on the second educational path. From 1976 to 1981 he studied business administration at the University of Wuppertal and the University of Cologne . In 1982 he became a research assistant at Jürgen Berthel's chair (business administration and human resources management) at the University of Siegen . After receiving his doctorate, he also worked there as a university assistant (1986–91) and university lecturer (1991). After completing his habilitation , he initially held the chair for international management at the Bundeswehr University in Munich (HT 1991) before accepting a professorship for general business administration as well as personnel and organization studies at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena (1992–1996) . Since 1996 he has held the chair for business administration, in particular human resources, organization and management, at Bielefeld University. In 2004 he turned down a call to the University of Siegen. From 1992 to 1994 he was visiting lecturer at the Technical University of Chemnitz . He was also a visiting professor at the University of Vienna in the 2003 summer semester.

His main research areas are: incentive systems for executives, personnel / performance / potential assessment, demographic personnel work (including realistic recruitment, staff retention, inplacement), evaluation and transfer control of personnel development, strategically-oriented personnel management, personnel work in family businesses and academic personnel management (especially appointment procedures, Inplacement of new appointments, incentives for “good” teaching).

Fred G. Becker was the initiator of the promotion of young talent in the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration . V. and there member and chairman of the working group for the promotion of young talent (1998–2008) and 2007–2008 board member. He is co-founder and chairman of the Institute for Family Business (iFUn) - Ostwestfalen-Lippe at the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Law at Bielefeld University (since 2014). Since 2001 he has been the board spokesman of the Institute for Management at Bielefeld University. V. (IUUB). He was dean of the Faculty of Economics (2009–11), chairman of the Senate of Bielefeld University (2013–18) and a member and co-chair of the rector and chancellor commissions as well as the constitutional commissions. From 2012 to 2013 he was president of the Rotary Club Bielefeld-Süd and he is chairman of the jury “Entrepreneur of the Year OWL” (since 2007).
