Fritz Gustav Waldemar Hellwig was born as the youngest son of the Strehlen blacksmith Fritz Karl Hellwig and Marie, Elise, Lydia Pfeiffer. In the sixth generation he was trained as a blacksmith in his father's company. In 1939 he became Julius Schramm's personal assistant in Berlin. In the same year he began his studies at the "State School for Applied Arts", which in 1940 was renamed the " Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg ".

After fleeing from Silesia, he settled in Dortmund . There he married the artist and fashion designer Gertrude Haselhoff. Here he found the place of his artistic work and quickly made a name for himself as a freelance metal sculptor, sculptor and blacksmith far beyond the city limits. In the 1950s and 60s, he was considered the planner and designer of major building projects by the Dortmund authorities, in particular the city building department.

In the early 1970s, the artist couple moved to El Sauzal on the island of Tenerife . He designed and forged both a crucifix and the large ceiling lights for the San Telmo chapel in Puerto de la Cruz, which was then renovated by the Catholic community abroad . In the mid-1970s, the couple returned to Germany and settled in the Greif house in Grevenstein. In 1974 he designed the "Europa auf dem Stier", a metal sculpture in Dortmund on the old market. At the end of the 1970s, the couple moved on to southern Germany to Krautheim in Baden-Württemberg .
