Frederick "Fred" Watson (born November 30, 1888 in Aberdeen , † June 29, 1917 in Milford Haven ) was a Scottish football player .

Career

Watson played in the Junior Football of Aberdeen for Aberdeen Shamrock . In 1910 he joined Aberdeen FC , the city's leading club. In the following years, Watson , who was popular because of "his smart disposition and his warm-hearted bonmots ", played for him as a middle runner, mostly in the reserve team. For the first team, he made half a dozen appearances between 1912 and 1914, including a game in the Scottish Football League Division One in the 1912/13 season , when he and the two outside runners Stewart Davidson and George Wilson played a 1-3. Loss to Hibernian Edinburgh formed the runner row. Although the press response was somewhat benevolent, this was his only league appearance. The Scottish Referee said, “Watson did well as a middle runner for a first run in Senior League Football and should get another probation opportunity.” And the Aberdeen Daily Journal said: “The [runner] series has been as lax as ever. Watson was a painter, but he lacks speed and his inexperience gave Hendren plenty of leeway. "The Dundee Courier added:" Watson, the reserve center runner, couldn't get a less favorable baptism, Hendren was a thorn in his flesh and left him with no rest from start to finish. "

Watson earned his living as a stonemason , but he gave up this profession to join the Royal Naval Reserve during the First World War . On board the HMS Peterel he served with the rank of petty officer in mine clearance. Watson fell ill and died at the age of 28 in June 1917 in a military hospital at Milford Haven naval base . He left his wife and was buried in Aberdeen.
