Life

Frederic Hauge 2006

Hauge had been the organizational secretary of the Natur og Ungdom (Norwegian nature conservation youth ) association since 1985 and was portrayed for the first time on NRK television. His first spectacular campaign began in the same year against Hydro Polymers (then a subsidiary of Norsk Hydro ) in Rafsnes . Three activists, including Frederic Hauge, climbed onto the Hydro Rafsnes distillation tower and hung a large banner reading “Fem år med EDC - Hva gjør SFT?”.

In 1986 the Bellona Environmental Foundation was established . Since the mid-1980s, Hauge has been a participant and co-organizer of numerous demonstrations and non-violent actions against various industrial plants, poison dumps and the like all over Norway and abroad.

Since 1996, Hauge and the entire Bellona Foundation have been particularly heavily involved in and around the legal proceedings of the former Russian submarine captain and environmentalist Alexander Nikitin , who was accused of treason and espionage and imprisoned because of his collaboration with Bellona in Russia. Nikitin faced the death penalty and his trial received widespread international attention. In 1999, Nikitin was acquitted and released. Bellona had millions in expenses in connection with the process.
