FreeOTFE is a 2004 published open source - software for encryption of hard disks under Microsoft Windows ( PCs ) and Windows Mobile ( PDA ).
The project's (former) website, FreeOTFE.org, has been inaccessible since 2013 and has been transferred to a different owner.
Functions
FreeOTFE is an implementation of OTFE and is compatible with encrypted volumes created under Linux (e.g. LUKS , cryptoloop dm-crypt ). These volumes can be read and written to under Windows. Hidden volumes can be created and opened. This allows a credible deniability (Engl. Plausible deniability ).
The program offers a " portable mode ". It does not have to be installed before use, but administrator rights are required under Windows to integrate the drivers. However, the program variant FreeOTFE Explorer does not require administrator rights.

License
In the past, the license from FreeOTFE denied the author of modifications any rights to his changes, as these had to be published in the public domain , which contradicted point 3 of the open source definition . However, at the beginning of 2009 there was a license change. The new license, which was published under the name " FreeOTFE License ", is similar in content to the Reciprocal Public License, which is recognized as open source, but not by the Free Software Foundation .
