Freedom is an English language anarchist magazine published by Freedom Press in London . The magazine first appeared in 1886 as the successor to The Anarchist magazineand waseditedby a group led by Charlotte Wilson and Peter Kropotkin .
history
The editor of an earlier, similarly oriented paper, The Anarchist , saw himself as an individualistic anarchist and also opened his newspaper to authors who wrote articles on communist anarchism such as Charlotte Wilson and George Bernard Shaw . In 1886, the articles by Peter Kropotkin led to a conflict between the group and the editor, who then closed the journal.
The then newly founded magazine Freedom took a communist-anarchist point of view and in 1889 changed its subtitle from A Journal of Anarchist Socialism to A Journal of Anarchist Communism .
In 1895 Albert Marsh took over the publication of the magazine and in 1898 Freedom was able to take over the printing works from nephews of the artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti , who had discontinued their own anarchist magazine. A serious internal conflict arose in the new magazine between supporters of the Allies in World War I , including Peter Kropotkin, and the war opponents. The high point of the conflict was the reprint of the 1916 Manifesto of the Sixteen in Freedom magazine . After 1928, the magazine appeared only irregularly for a while, as the number of participants in the anarchist movement in England fell sharply. During the Second World War the publication of the magazine was hindered by the police because of anti-militarist positions and some authors were arrested.
After a redesign in January 2008, the magazine is now published every two weeks and has 16 pages.
The printed edition was discontinued in 2014. Since then, Freedom has only been published online.
