Freepsumer Church

The Evangelical Reformed Freepsumer Church is located in the East Frisian town of Freepsum , in the Krummhörn . The structure of today's church dates back to the second half of the 13th century.

history

The terp village Freepsum is first mentioned in a document around the year 1000 under the name Fresbachteshem . Around 1260, the residents built today's church on the highest point of the terp. The building has undergone many structural changes over the centuries. So the portals were relocated and the old ones walled up and the small, original arched windows on the south side were replaced by large window openings that let more light into the interior of the church. The original shape of the windows can still be seen on the north side of the church.

Until December 31, 2010, Freepsum and the neighboring Groß-Midlum formed a parish, which was then divided. Freepsum was united with the parishes of Canum and Woltzeten under one rectory and Groß-Midlum was united with the parishes of Hinte and Westerhusen under one rectory. They all belong to the Evangelical Reformed Church .

description

Clock on the south wall

The building was erected as a simple rectangular one-room church made of brick in the Romanesque style. It has a length of 25.1 m and a width of 8.2 m. The outer walls are structured in the upper part by pilaster strips placed between the windows . In the north the windows were kept in their original form, in the south they were enlarged. A hagioscope is preserved in the south wall , which was temporarily walled up. At the eastern end of the north wall there was a portal that is now walled up. There may be another at the west end. However, this can no longer be ascertained today, as the masonry there, together with the west gable, was largely renewed. The east wall is divided by two ogival windows with round windows above, so-called ox eyes . The interior was originally flat. Today it is closed at the top with a wooden barrel vault . On the two long walls, attracts just under the Sohlbankhöhe a wall recess of the window along, which is slightly higher on the east wall. Next to the church is a closed bell tower from the 16th century with seven sound openings.

Furnishing

The clock on the south wall under the angel's head was probably installed around 1600. The dial is located between colored columns with Roman numerals and in the middle of the hands, surrounded by a shining sun. Above and below the dial is a two-line Latin verse. Above it says: “Respice qui transis discasqz volubile tempus” (translated: “Look back who you pass by and may you get to know the turning time”). Below you can read: “Hei mihi quod praesans temere defluxerit aetas” (translated: “Woe to me if the present time flows haphazardly”). In 1995 the clock was completely renovated.

The interior of the church is kept very simple. To be mentioned here are above all a communion table from 1625, the communion chalice from 1638, several preaches and some grave slabs from the 16th and 17th centuries. The one-manual organ was built in 1836–1839 by Wilhelm Caspar Joseph Höffgen with eight registers and an attached pedal. The instrument has been almost completely preserved, but is currently being fundamentally restored.
