Freiburg Circle (Forum)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Freiburg Circle is an open forum for liberals, which, according to its own statement, emphasizes the holistic nature of liberalism and stands for a programmatic expansion beyond economic liberalism . The forum is considered to be left or social liberal . The name was chosen based on the Freiburg theses of the FDP from 1971.

The Freiburg Circle goes back to an initiative of Wolfgang Lüder in the 1960s, who was federal chairman of the Young Democrats at the time. He is the successor to the "Sylter Kreis", named after the Hotel Sylter Hof in Berlin, an occasional meeting place for some left-wing liberal party members.

The Freiburg circle includes Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger , Gerhart Rudolf Baum , Burkhard Hirsch and Carola von Braun , and formerly Walter Scheel . Some members converted to the SPD in 1982 in protest against the Bonn turnaround . These include Günter Verheugen , Andreas von Schoeler and Ingrid Matthäus-Maier .

Both the Freiburg and Sylt districts, both of which do not have fixed organizational structures, have suffered from the fragmentation within the social-liberal members of the FDP since the beginning; there is no firmly established wing. The climax of the activities was therefore also in the time of the social-liberal coalition , the influence declined noticeably after the end of this coalition.
