Freelance Thallern

The Freilut Thallern , also Stiftsweingut Heiligenkreuz , is a winery of the Stift Heiligenkreuz in the district of Thallern in the market town of Gumpoldskirchen and is located in the Thermenregion wine-growing region in Lower Austria .

history

To the north-east of the wine village of Gumpoldskirchen, a freehold estate was documented as a gift from Margrave Leopold IV in 1141 to Heiligenkreuz Abbey. The monastery then built an estate, which was planned based on the model of the winery in Clos de Vougeot near Citeaux .

Chapel of St. John the Baptist

The free property is made up of several irregularly arranged buildings. Most interesting from a cultural and historical point of view is the building with the distinctive church tower, which, in addition to hotel rooms, contains the chapel of St. John the Baptist with a carved altar by Giovanni Giuliani . The altar shows Christ crucified on a vine. In the main building there are seminar rooms and a vinotheque. There is also a wine cellar and an inn. Remains of a former defensive wall are still there and after the destruction in the Turkish War in 1683 the buildings were partially changed.

Todays use

Today, the farm is the central winery for all vineyards in the monastery.

Since 2010 the property has been revitalized as a tourism project. The Thermenregion vinotheque and a country inn have already been set up.
