Freedom Turkish-German friendship association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Freedom Turkish-German Friendship Association e. V. ( HÜR-TÜRK ) was founded in 1979 in Bonn by the then Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey , Süleyman Demirel , with the support of the CDU and the Turkish Justice Party (AP) . The association had around 50 local chapters in Germany. Hans Stercken , a CDU member of the Bundestag for many years, was chairman of the association until his death.

The association sees itself as a “gathering movement of the political center and against all political extremism” and was seen as the mouthpiece of the Motherland Party (ANAP) , the successor party of the AP. The association was financed through donations and membership fees.

The focus of the association's work was the improvement of German-Turkish understanding, for example through student exchange programs and assistance for young people with school issues. Language courses were also offered. Representing Turkish migrants and strengthening their rights in Germany were also goals of the association.
