description

The Masonic Temple of Alexandria is to the northwest of the city at the intersection of Gilmour Street and Smollett Street . The building was built in 1888 as the Ewing Gilmour Institute for Working Girls . As the architect, John Archibald Campbell was responsible for the planning, who made a design in the style of the Scottish Baronial with details from the Arts and Crafts movement on the rear wing. The Masonic Temple is made of pink sandstone and has an L-shaped floor plan. All building openings are set off with red sandstone. The individual parts of the building are either one or two-story. The entrance area is on Gilmour Street. A blasted gable crowns the wooden entrance door. The upper floor ends with a balustrade on corbels and cantilevered corner turrets. On the flatter part of the building on the left, windows are arranged on three vertical axes, which are worked as portholes with decorative gables. The windows on the upper floor along Smollett Street are also dormer windows with ornate gables. Lead glass windows are used at ground level. The building ends with gable roofs that are covered with either green slate shingles or modern bricks.
